The Weepies

THE WEEPIES

HOMETOWN:

Topanga, CA (via Cambridge, MA)

THE BASICS:
This folksy couple -- now married, with a son! -- met in Cambridge, MA, in 2001, and began a collaboration that's yielded three full-length albums, most recently 2008's Hideaway. A favorite of music supervisors on TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother, the duo also found their music being licensed for use by the Obama campaign for an ad called "His Choice."

WHERE HOPP HEARD THEM FIRST:
"On my Apple TV, at the recommendation of my friend Justin, who also made me listen to the Temper Trap -- who were featured in an earlier installment of this column. I was on the phone with Justin and demanded new music to listen to. He suggested the Weepies, so I bought it sound-unheard and really loved it from the first listen."

WHY THEY ROCK:
"'Rock' might not be the right word, but they definitely rule. I'm really late on the uptake with this band, as their last CD came out a couple of years ago, but I'd like to think that I'm ahead of the curve because their next album is slated for release in the next few months. In any case, the Weepies are folksy, indie-rocky, singery/songwritery little three-minute pieces of awesome. Quiet, acoustic, luscious and beautiful. Great late-night music."

HOPP'S TOP TRACK:
"'Antarctica.' Last winter, I took a trip to Antarctica, and the mood of this song reminds me of the stark beauty of the icy continent. How artistic was THAT last sentence?"
